TEMPO.CO, JakartaSeveral factors must be considered to judge whether a city is the most livable for its residents. Those factors are public facilities, places of worship, clean water, education, health services, transportation, and many more.

According to the Indonesian city planning association or IAP (Indonesian Association of Urban and Regional Planners), there are at least 7 best cities to live in Indonesia. The list is derived from its 2022 survey based on residents' perceptions on 28 indicators such as health facilities, food security, transportation, security, waste management, and government services in each city.

So, what cities have been named the best cities to live in Indonesia? 

7 Most Livable Cities in Indonesia

Below are the 7 most livable cities in Indonesia with high scores on the Most Livable City Index (MLCI) with an average score of 70 or above out of 100.

1. Solo

The first city to be named the most livable is Solo. Located in Central Java, this city achieved the highest MLCI score at 77.1 among other cities in Indonesia. This city in Central Java Province achieved the highest MLCI score among many cities in Indonesia. Solo has good infrastructure, organized city planning, and various facilities for its residents. Solo also has a natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage.

2. Yogyakarta

The next best city to live in Indonesia is Yogyakarta, with an MLCI score of 75.3. Yogyakarta is a city of culture and culinary delights. Yogyakarta has many types of iconic cuisine, including gudeg, nasi kucing (a type of rice dish in small portions with particular side dishes), and sate klathak.

3. Cirebon

In third position for the most livable city in Indonesia is Cirebon with a comfortable MLCI score of 74.4. Cirebon has marine resource potential, especially vaname shrimp, its main export commodity. This city is also notable for its specialty dishes, such as nasi jamblang, empal gentong, tahu gejrot, and koclok noodles.

4. Magelang

Magelang, another city in Central Java has an an MLCI score of 73.4. Magelang houses historical sites such as Borobudur Temple, Mendut Temple, Pawon Temple, Pangeran Diponegoro Museum, and the National Museum of Karmawibhangga. Not only suitable for traveling due to its rich cultural heritage, Magelang is also a comfortable city to live in.

5. Semarang

Semarang has an MLCI score of 73.3.This capital of Central Java is a modern economic and industrial center with ports, airports, toll roads, shopping centers and tall buildings. Semarang could be an option if you are looking for a place to live with a modern atmosphere.

6. Kediri

With an MLCI score of 72.5, Kediri is one of the most livable cities in Indonesia. Located in East Java, Kediri has a number of tourist destinations, such as Dolo-Dolo Waterfall, Agro Park, and historical tourism such as the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI) and the Kediri Railway Museum. Other than its tourism, Kediri has several specialty dishes such as soto, pecel tumpang, and taku takwa. 

7. Mataram

The last on the rank of best cities to live in Indonesia is Mataram with an MLCI score of 72.2. Located in West Nusa Tenggara, this is the largest city on Lombok Island. For those looking for a livable city complete with stunning natural beauty, Mataram could be the right choice.
