TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded defeat in the national election on Friday, saying the opposition Labour Party had won.
"The Labour Party has won this general election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory," Sunak said after winning his parliamentary seat in northern England.
"Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. That is something that should give us all confidence in our country's stability and future."
The UK elections took place on Thursday, with Keir Starmer’s Labour Party winning by a landslide. Starmer is set to become UK’s new prime minister, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.
So far, the party has won 412 of a total of 650 seats in the House of Commons after the vote-counting process was carried out in 474 parliamentary constituencies.
Rishi Sunak has officially resigned as prime minister in a visit to Buckingham Palace today. In a statement, the Palace confirmed that Sunak "tendered his resignation as prime minister" in a meeting with the King.
"The Right Honourable Rishi Sunak MP had an audience of the King this morning and tendered his resignation as prime minister and first lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept," the statement read.
Sunak also confirmed earlier that he would step down as Tory leader, but “not immediately,” as he would wait for the process to elect a successor.
