TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Layered security screening at airports is mandatory to protect passengers from all sorts of dangerous threats. At many airports, passengers are required to remove liquids and personal electronics such as laptops and tablets from carry-on luggage as they pass through X-ray scanners and metal detectors.
Liquids have been under intense surveillance to prevent plots involving chemical explosives. Because most scanners cannot detect liquids with electronic devices in the way, laptops, tablets and e-book readers also need to be taken out of the bag and placed on trays.
But since 2015, a number of airports around the world have been replacing outdated scanning systems with advanced computed tomography (CT) X-ray machines, CNA reported.
These CT scanners generate three-dimensional views, allowing security personnel to rotate images and inspect the contents of carry-on bags from different angles. This makes airport security procedures much easier for passengers by reducing screening time, minimizing the risk of delays and providing passengers with a less stressful journey.
Listed below are 16 airports around the world that have CT scanners in their international terminals. It is worth noting that air travelers should always check with their airlines and the websites or airports they are departing from or arriving at.
