TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police announced they had once again arrested a criminal syndicate specializing in counterfeit COVID-19 test results, both rapid tests and PCR swab tests, that were sold through social media and word of mouth.
“Some of the suspects work as employees in laboratories and clinics,” said Metro Jaya Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus on January 25.
The suspects marketed their services since November 2020 with price tags of Rp90,000 for a counterfeit antigen rapid test result and Rp900,000 for a fake PCR swab test result. To investigators, the suspects claimed they had sold 11 bogus test results.
“However, the total number they sold and how many customers they have are still under investigation,” said Yusri.
Previously, Soekarno-Hatta aviation security personnel nabbed 15 members of a counterfeit scheme for COVID-19 test results. One of the suspects was a member of the airport’s security personnel. The suspects now face a 6 years' imprisonment for forging official documents under Article 263 of the Criminal Code.
