BMKG Keeps Detecting Aftershocks in Cianjur; Number Hits 510

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 510 aftershocks as of 22:00 local time on Sunday, February 12, 2023, following the devastating 5.6-magnitude earthquake on November 21, 2022. The latest aftershock measuring 2.5 magnitudes on the Richter scale was felt by people in Cianjur and its vicinity at 21:49 local time.
Based on the agency’s termor level map and public reports, the tremor was felt in Cibereum, Cilaku, Ciseupan, and Nagrak areas with an intensity scale of II MMI.
The earthquake was centered on land at 6.85 degrees south latitude and 107.1 degrees east longitude, 5 kilometers southwest of Cianjur. It was also classified as a shallow quake given its depth of 10 kilometers. "[It was] as a result of the Cugenang Fault activity," said the Head of BBMKG Region II Tangerang Hartanto in a written statement on Sunday, February 12, 2023.
BMKG appealed to residents to stay calm and not be easily influenced by baseless issues.
