Jokowi Blames Great Harvest for Falling Corn Price

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi said that the price of corn is currently falling because of the peak harvest period in various regions of Indonesia. He said the harvest has started from West Sumbawa, Dompu, to Gorontalo.
“Every plant is being harvested, so prices are falling due to oversupply,” he said after inspecting the corn harvest in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) on Thursday, May 2, as Tempo monitored via the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.
The former mayor of Solo said that the price of corn used to be Rp7,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, the current price declined to Rp4,200 per kilogram. This situation caused different impacts on livestock breeders and farmers.
“It is good for the breeders, but not good for the farmers,” the state head said. “It is not easy to maintain the balance.”
However, Jokowi emphasized that farmers still need to maintain their productivity in order to continue to make progress. “If productivity is low, farmers will only make modest profits,” he said.
