TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of airports in the Indonesian airspace over Sulawesi remain closed today due to the spread of volcanic ash from the newly erupted Mount Ruang. AirNav Indonesia announced that there are at least five airports in the Sulawesi region whose operational closures have been extended, while two other airports have been declared able to operate normally.

"AirNav Indonesia has issued several new Notams (Notice to AirMen) regarding the opening and extension of the temporary closure of several airports in the Sulawesi region," AirNav Indonesia Corporate Secretary Hermana Soegijantoro said in a written statement on Wednesday, May 1.

The five airports are:

  1. Sam Ratulangi, Manado. Closed until 12:00 on May 2
  2. Djalaluddin, Gorontalo. Closed until 24:00 on May 1.
  3. Sitaro Siau. Closed until 12:00 on May 2.
  4. Bolaan Mongondow. Closed till 12:00 on May 2.
  5. Pohuwato. The airport recently inaugurated by President Jokowi is closed until 12:00 on May 2.

Meanwhile, two airports have been declared safe to resume normal operations. They are Naha Tahuna Airport, which was declared safe to resume operations at 12:10 Central Indonesia Time (WITA) on May 1, and Buol Pogogul Airport, which resumed operations at 18:03 today, May 1.

Hermana said AirNav will continue to monitor and work with all relevant stakeholders to provide the latest information on the impact of the Mount Ruang eruption.

The Indonesian Center for Volcanic Geological Disaster Mitigation concluded that the status of Mount Ruang today is still at level 4 or Alert. The paper test results show a negative direction, with the wind direction predominantly to the west, away from Manado. However, the volcanic ash accumulation from the previous day was still thick and dangerous for flights.
