Jokowi Allows Up to 16-year Term for Village Heads

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi recently enacted Law No. 3 of 2024 on Villages or the Village Law, which amended the previous law passed in 2014. In the new regulation, the office term of a village head is extended from six years to eight years.
Additionally, a village head is allowed to serve for two terms. In the old policy, the term of office is limited to three terms.
“The village head shall hold office for eight years from the date of inauguration,” as written in Article 39(1) in the Village Law, which was accessed on Thursday, May 2.
The limit of two office terms for village heads is regulated in the next paragraph. However, the Village Law does not directly impose the two-term limit, leaving open the possibility for village heads and members of the village advisory body who are serving their second term to re-nominate themselves.
As previously reported, the House of Representatives (DPR) approved the revised Village Law in a plenary meeting with the government on Thursday, March 28, 2024.
