BMKG Reports 5.6M Earthquake in South Ende Beach, NTT

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 5.6-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at 10:54 a.m., at South Ende Beach, NTT. It was located in the ocean 19 kilometers away from the northwest of Ende at a 182 kilometers depth.

According to the Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of BMKG, Daryono, the earthquake was caused by rock deformation due to a slab-pull mechanism in the Indo-Australian plate. The quake has a normal fault movement.

The shaking was felt in Waingapu, Ende with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI. The earthquake also shook Sumbawa, Dompu, Bima City, Bima Regency, Ngada, Mataram, East Lombok, and West Sumbawa with a III MMI intensity. 

Meanwhile, in Bali, the earthquake was felt in Gianyar, Denpasar, and Bajawa with a II MMI intensity. 

According to the data, there are no reports of casualties from the earthquake. No potential for tsunamis, and until 11:23 a.m., no reported aftershocks.

Daryono urged citizens to stay calm and remain vigilant. He also recommends people avoid crumbling and damaged buildings in affected areas.
