Indonesia's Angklung Showcase Breaks Guinness World Record

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Angklung showcase held in the Main Stadium of Gelora Bung Karno on Saturday, August 5, 2023, broke Guinness World Records as the biggest Angklung showcase in the world. The showcase consisted of 15,110 participants from various different backgrounds, such as students, teachers, and state officials.
The Director of Film, Music, and Media of the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry Ahmad Mahendra said the preparation for this event began in October 2022. The ministry prepared 20,060 units of Angklung and distributed them to 381 Angklung groups. Each of the groups has 40 members.
"Angklung has been recognized by UNESCO as Indonesia's cultural heritage since 2010. Angklung has educational value in need of preservation to be inherited by the next generation," said Ahmad in his statement on Sunday, August 6, 2023. Angklung has been recognized as a world heritage since November 16, 2010.
The ministry also partnered up with Saung Angklung Udjo (SAU), to design the musicality, conductor video, and Angklung training for all the participants. "In addition to being trained directly by SAU, we also involved 182 trained supervisors to accompany each group's independent training," said Ahmad. The supervisors consisted of music teachers and Angklung artists.
The Director of Senior High Education of the Education Ministru Winner Jihad said the ministry collaborated with the Education Department of Jakarta, West Java, and Banten to gather 1,000 participants from 25 schools. "The involvement of high school students is part of the efforts to introduce and encourage love toward the musical instrument. You can learn about collaboration, discipline, and patience from this instrument," Winner said.
