5.2 M Earthquake Jolts Lebak, Pelabuhan Ratu

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 in the Richter scale today morning at 5:21 a.m. jolted Lebak, Banten Province. The strongest shaking was felt in Panggarangan.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the quake had no potential for a tsunami.
Based on the agency’s analysis, the quake epicenter was located at 7.54 degrees south latitude and 106.01 degrees east longitude, or in the sea about 72 kilometers southwest of Bayah, Lebak.
“The source of the quake is at a depth of 30 kilometers,” said the agency’s quake and tsunami center head, Rahmat Triyono, in a written statement.
From the epicenter and the hypocenter, it was categorized as a shallow quake caused by subduction activity. The analysis result of the quake mechanism concluded that it was triggered by a thrust fault.
The shaking intensity level IV of the MMI scale was recorded in Panggarangan, level II-III in Sukabumi, and level II in Pelabuhan Ratu.
BMKG has not received a report on the damage caused by the quake thus far. Until 6 a.m., there were zero aftershocks. People are asked to remain calm and not be influenced by baseless issues regarding the earthquake.
