TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Communications and Informatics (Kominfo) Minister Johnny G. Plate said hoaxes or false information were still rife on various platforms, especially social media, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on the data collected by Kominfo, Johnny said nearly 2,000 hoaxes related to the coronavirus disease were found on digital platforms, including Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
“We have asked managers of these platforms to take down those hoaxes. To date, almost 1,900 hoaxes have been removed,” said the minister during a meeting with Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X at the Kepatihan Office on Friday, October 16, 2020.
Johnny claimed he had personally contacted managers of the digital platforms both in Indonesia and abroad.
“Last month (September), I communicated with the CEO of Youtube, Susan Wojcicki, in the United States, asking her to take rapid measures to clean up hoaxes in her platform,” he said.
The government and the people, Johnny went on, must maintain the safety of these digital platforms from false news as mandated in the Information and Electronic Transaction Law or ITE Law by checking and rechecking, as well as confirming any information developing in the digital space.
