TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Foreign Affairs Ministry today confirmed that groups of Indonesians were involved in a physical fight in the Dalseo-gu area of Daegu, South Korea. The fight on April 28 left one Indonesian dead and four others injured.
Judha Nugraha, the Foreign Affairs Ministry's director for the protection of Indonesian citizens (WNI) and Indonesian legal entities (BHI), said the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul had coordinated with local police, community leaders/WNI associations, and the Organizations Communication Forum Massa (Fokomasi) to defuse the tension.
"The local police have arrested an Indonesian citizen suspected of being the perpetrator of the stabbing," Judha said.
Local police were still investigating the cause of the fight.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry and the embassy in Seoul urged Indonesians living in South Korea, especially the groups involved in the brawl, to stop the dispute and create a calm and conducive atmosphere.
On Sunday, the Daegu Seongseo Police Station reported that it had arrested an Indonesian man in his forties on suspicion of killing another Indonesian. Police are still investigating the case.
The man is suspected of stabbing another Indonesian in his 30s on the street near a foreigners' club in Hosan-dong, Dalseo-gu, at around 8:55 a.m. Sunday. He then fled the scene. The victim was rushed to a hospital by ambulance, but his life could not be saved.
The suspect was arrested at a house in Dasan-myeon, Goryeong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, at around 5 p.m. on the same day. The suspect and the victim did not know each other. It is speculated that they were both drunk and had an argument that escalated into a physical fight.
