100 Flights Disrupted Post Engine Fire Case on Garuda Indonesia's Medina-Bound Plane

21 May 2024 10:25 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe incident of engine fire on the Garuda Indonesia’s plane carrying Hajj pilgrims from Makassar to Medina, Saudi Arabia on May 15 has disrupted at least 100 flights. The Boeing 747-400 aircraft is still out of service.

While the jetliner was being inspected and repaired, the national flag carrier deployed two spare planes usually used for regular flights to accommodate the Hajj pilgrims.

“By May 25, it (the incident) will affect about 100 regular flights, both domestic and international flights,” Garuda’s President Director Irfaniaputra said during a hearing with Commission VIII of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Senayan on Monday, May 20.

Irfan explained that Garuda had no available aircraft with a capacity of 450 passengers. Hence, the company used Boeing 777 and Airbus, with a respective capacity of 368 and 242 passengers, for the Hajj pilgrims.

Garuda, he added, made many adjustments after the incident. Some of the significant changes included replacing wide-body aircraft with small-body aircraft.

“We have communicated the impact of this incident and apologized. We will continue to provide two planes to transport the pilgrims from Makassar until the plane can be operated.”

Apart from that, Garuda Indonesia rescheduled the departure while ensuring the aircraft's readiness. “We apologize for the delays. We admit that there have been a lot of flight delays because a plane we rented has not arrived yet,” Irfan added.
