21 May 2024 09:15 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The seismic activity resulted in a tectonic earthquake of 5.0 magnitude that jolted Malang Regency, East Java, and reportedly reached Kuta, Bali. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the quake occurred at 2:42 a.m. local time and was centered in the sea, south of Java, or 112 kilometers from Malang.

With a depth of 81 kilometers, the quake was confirmed to have no potential to trigger a tsunami. “It was an intermediate quake caused by the activity in the Indo-Australian plate (intraslab event),” the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami Center, Daryono, said in a written statement.

The shaking was felt in the Karangkates area, Malang Regency, with an intensity scale of III MMI. It was also experienced at a lower intensity in Malang, Jember, East Java and even in Kuta, Bali.

Earlier on Monday night at 20:42 local time, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 also shook the areas of Sukabumi and Cianjur. The epicenter was likewise situated in the south sea of Java, 79 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi, West Java, at a depth of 22 kilometers.
