M4.9 Earthquake Shakes Gianyar Bali

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 4.9 earthquake jolted Gianyar Regency of Bali on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 9:51 local time. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, stated the quake was centered at 2 kilometers northeast of Gianyar, Bali, at a depth of 10 kilometers on the land.
BMKG Denpasar chief Cahyo Nugroho said the shallow quake was caused by the activity of active plates on land. "Based on the analysis of the source mechanism, the quake was classified as a down-motion mechanism or normal fault," he said in a written statement Saturday.
Referring to public reports, the M4.9 earthquake was felt in Gianyar on the III-IV MMI scale, or the vibrations felt as if a truck was passing by. The effect could cause a window or door glass to rattle.
During the day, the magnitude of the earthquake was also felt by people outside. The quake was also felt in Tabanan, Badung, Denpasar, Klungkung, Mataram, East Lombok, Central Lombok, and West Lombok at level III on the MMI scale.
Cahyo confirmed that there were no reports of damage after the earthquake. Based on BMKG analysis, no tsunami potential from the quake. "As of 10:21 Bali time, BMKG monitoring has shown no aftershocks.
