BMKG: M4.5 Earthquake in Gunungkidul Is 258th Aftershock from Megathrust Zone

12 September 2024 15:59 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake rocked Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, and surrounding areas on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 10:25:13 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

The agency’s analysis revealed that the quake had a magnitude of 4.5. Its epicenter was located at coordinates 8.72° South Latitude and 110.25° East Longitude, specifically at sea, 90 kilometers southwest of Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, at a depth of 30 kilometers.

“Considering the epicenter and the hypocenter, the quake is classified as a shallow quake resulting from rock deformation in the contact zone between tectonic plates (megathrust),” explained Daryono, Head of the BMKG’s quake and tsunami Center, on Thursday, Sept. 12.

The tremors were felt in the Gunungkidul, Bantul, Pacitan, and Wonogiri areas with an intensity of II MMI, meaning the tremors were felt by a few people and caused light-hanging objects to sway. As of Thursday, September 12, at 11:00 WIB, there were no reports of damage caused by the seismic event.

According to BMKG monitoring, this quake was part of a series of aftershocks following the M5.8 earthquake that struck Gunungkidul on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 19:57:42 WIB. To date, a total of 258 aftershocks have been recorded.
