TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Volunteers of Muhammadiyah’s disaster mitigation organization (MDMC) claims that police members tasked to secure the anti-omnibus law mass protest had used excessive force against their field volunteer medics on Tuesday, October 13.

“Four MDMC volunteers tasked in the field wearing uniforms that wrote “Muhammadiyah Volunteers’ were barged with police motorcycles and then were beaten. After they fell to the ground they were dragged to a police vehicle while being constantly beaten and kicked,” said MDMC chairperson Budi Setiawan in a written release on Wednesday, October 14.

According to Budi, this unfortunate incident happened to his volunteer medics stationed in front of the Fresher Apartment in Central Jakarta’s Menteng on Tuesday. He asserts his people were there to provide healthcare for anyone in the surrounding area of the mass protests.

Not only were the volunteers beaten by a group of Metro Jaya Police personnel, Budi claims police also attacked several members of the public who were there.

“Four of MDMC Bekasi volunteers have been taken to the Cempaka Putih Hospital for further treatment,” said Budi who urged police to remain professional in the field and protect volunteer medics.
