TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Singapore-based global social live-streaming service Bigo Live said it has removed more than 40,000 pieces of content on its online streaming platform between January and August 2024. The company also said it has suspended 50,000 accounts for the safety and comfort of users.
Bigo Live also revealed that it had received the latest warning letter from the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information regarding online gambling and pornographic content on its platform. It claimed that communication has been established based on the contents of the letter, including by actively receiving input from Kominfo since last year.
To date, Bigo Live has been receiving input from the ministry since last year.
"We value the users in Indonesia. We are committed to ensuring that Bigo Live remains a safe and dignified live streaming platform for all users in Indonesia," Bigo Live said in a written statement to Tempo on Monday, August 26.
Bigo Live said it has toughened and improved its content moderation system to eliminate content that is not in line with Indonesian culture. The content moderation in question relates to restrictions on video, audio, speech, and text that may offend users in Indonesia.
In addition, Bigo Live said it has also implemented stricter preventive measures against misuse and improper management of the platform.
"Bigo Live continues to strive to create a green and clean digital environment to improve the user experience for everyone," Bigo Live said at the end of its written response.
On August 21, the Ministry of Communication and Information issued a second warning to Bigo Live after the ministry's cyber patrol still found online gambling and pornographic content on the platform. The first warning was issued on July 16.
Communications Minister Budi Arie Setiadi threatened that if Bigo Live's management did not properly respond to the second warning, the app could be blocked or have its use restricted in Indonesia.
