West Sumatra Police Deny Dropping Investigation of AM's Death

TEMPO.CO, Padang - West Sumatra Police clarified reports that they had stopped investigating the death of a 13-year-old boy, AM, who was allegedly tortured by the police and found dead under the Kuranji Bridge in Padang City on Sunday, June 9, 2024.
“The West Sumatra Police would like to clarify the news, the circulating issue that the West Sumatra Police have stopped the case of the death of a body under the Kuranji Bridge,” West Sumatra Police’s Head of Public Relations, Sr. Comr. Dwi Sulistyawan, said at his office on Tuesday, July 2.
Dwi stressed that the mass media misinterpreted the statement of the West Sumatra Police Chief, Inspector General Suharyono, regarding the case's progress. “It was concluded that the West Sumatra Police have closed the case. In fact, the Police Chief did not say that,” he asserted.
Dwi reiterated that the investigation remains ongoing and has not been closed as widely reported. “We are still looking and examining this case. No closure has been reached.”
“It is clear that the West Sumatra Police are still actively seeking information, witnesses, and evidence,” he added.
Three witnesses have been questioned so far, including two members of the West Sumatra Regional Police and A, AM's friend. “Witness A is the one who talked to AM,” he said.
In addition, investigators are still looking for key witnesses who could shed light on AM's death. “We are still looking for new witnesses, including any potential leads from LBH Padang (a local legal aid organization),” Dwi said.
