TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko Widodo or Jokowi responded to the Election Organization Ethics Council's decision on General Election Commission (KPU) Head Hasyim Asy’ari’s dismissal for alleged sexual harassment.

“The government respects the Ethics Council’s authority to decide the case. The government also ensures the regional head elections will run smoothly,” he said on Thursday, July 4, 2024, in a video statement.

Jokowi said the Presidential Decree that would formalize the KPU Head’s dismissal is still being processed.

Ethics Council read out Hasyim Asy'ari's verdict on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, in a sexual harassment case against CAT, a member of the Den Haag Overseas Election Committee (PPLN).

Chairman of the Ethics Council, Heddy Lugito, fully accepted CAT's complaint and imposed permanent dismissal on Hasyim Asy'ari as KPU chairperson and member.

Hasyim Asy'ari thanked the council for dismissing him as KPU Head. "I would like to thank the Ethics Council for freeing me from the heavy duties as a member of KPU," said Hasyim on Wednesday.

Hasyim will officially be dismissed from his post after Jokowi signs the Presidential Decree. KPU commissioner member Mochammad Afifuddin served as Acting Chair of KPU after a plenary meeting on Thursday.
