TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia needs to think about its stance on artificial intelligence (AI) and pay attention to its AI policies, the head of education ecosystem at state-owned telecommunications company PT Telkom Indonesia, Sri Safitri, has said.

"The first is how we build awareness and education about AI," she informed during an online discussion forum here on Wednesday.

According to her, awareness and education about AI must be increased so that people understand its risks and benefits.

Activities such as campaigns, workshops, seminars, and educational programs, can be used to raise people's awareness about AI.

The second step: Indonesia needs to establish a clear ethical framework, which will serve as a guideline for ensuring responsible AI development, she said.

The third step is research and education. So far, the government has invested many resources in AI-focused education and research programs, including initiatives, such as those conducted by the Artificial Intelligence Industry Research and Innovation Collaboration (KORIKA).

The government has also continued to enhance education in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), which provide many opportunities for AI research, Safitri said.

"It is important for us to encourage sustainable research and innovation in AI with a focus on handling potential risks and developing solutions to mitigate them," she explained.

The fourth step is related to data governance, where Indonesia needs to ensure that its data management complies with the applicable regulations to support the responsible and safe use of AI, she added.

She stressed that it is important to establish strong data governance by ensuring responsible data collection, storage, and use.

The final step is collaboration and partnership, where Indonesia has been encouraged to actively engage with international organizations and work with industry leaders and research institutions to share knowledge and best practices on AI.

"By following these steps, Indonesia can build the foundation for ethical and beneficial Artificial Intelligence technologies and ensure that they are aligned with social values, Pancasila values, and respect human rights, and contribute to the overall welfare," she added..
