BMKG: Sukabumi Earthquake Felt until Bandung, Pangandaran

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 jolted Sukabumi at 10:05 a.m. Monday, October 31, 2022. The tremor reached its vicinity areas, including Bandung and Pangandaran. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the quake that was centered in the sea did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
It was precisely detected at 7.7 degrees south latitude and 106.88 degrees east longitude, or around 87 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi City. It was also classified as a shallow quake as it was at a depth of 20 kilometers.
“The quake is due to plate subduction activity,” said the agency’s head for region II South Tangerang, Hartanto, in a written statement, Monday, October 31, 2022.
The strong tremor was felt not only in nearby areas of Sukabumi but also in Bayah and Gunung Kencana. Residents in Bandung and Majalengka also reported the shaking which was detected at the intensity of II-III MMI.
People in Priangan Timur, such as south Garut, Tasikmalaya, and IUPangandaran, as well as Cianjur and Panggarangan also felt the quake at the intensity of III MMI. Meanwhile, weaker shaking was reported in Bandung and Tangerang.
The BMKG said there have been no reports of damage to buildings, and no aftershocks were monitored as of 10:45 a.m. People are asked to remain calm and not be influenced by baseless issues.
