TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs brought 36 guest teachers or mab'uts from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. They have completed the mandatory quarantine after arriving on Feb. 3 and would soon teach at a number of Islamic religious colleges, Islamic boarding schools, and Islamic schools, including state Islamic senior high school or MAN 2 Mataram in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
The MAN 2 Mataram principal, Lalu Syauki, expressed happiness for the presence of a guest teacher from Al-Azhar. He hoped that the guest teacher could strengthen the school programs considering that every year, the school sends its alumni to Al-Azhar.
“Until now, there are 26 alumni of MAN 2 Mataram who are studying at Al-Azhar University in Cairo,” said Lalu as quoted from the ministry’s official website on Thursday, Feb. 10.
The dozens of guest teachers will teach in 14 Islamic religious colleges, 14 Islamic boarding schools, and 8 Islamic schools across the archipelago.
The ministry’s Secretary of the Directorate General of Islamic Education, Rohmat Mulyana, said the presence of guest teachers from Al-Azhar University is expected to improve the competence of Arabic-speaking learners. “Bringing native speakers can accelerate students' language skills,” said Rohmat as quoted from the ministry’s page on Wednesday.
