TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 5.0 magnitude on the Richter Scale struck parts of Aceh Province on Thursday morning, January 7, 2021. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the quake occurred at 08:27 Indonesian Western Time (WIB).
The earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, the agency informed.
The agency's quake and tsunami mitigation bureau coordinator Daryono, explained that residents of Banda Aceh and Sabang felt the tremor. "The quake causes people to run out of their homes," Daryono said in a written statement on Thursday, January 7, 2020.
The BMKG analysis result showed that the shock happened due to rock deformation in the Indo-Australian Plate, which was subducted by the Eurasian Plate. The quake was triggered by a thrust fault.
As of 10:00 hours Wester Indonesian Time, the agency monitored no aftershocks following the tremor.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 6.26 degrees north latitude and 94.18 degrees east longitude, or precisely 132 kilometers northwest of Sabang City, Aceh Province, at a moderate depth of 64 kilometers.
