TEMPO.CO, Garut - Garut Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that landslide hit the main road of Limbangan this morning, February 21, was triggered by the earthquake which was centered in Tasikmalaya, West Java.

“The two disasters occur simultaneously,” said Tubagus Agus Sofyan, the Garut BPBD Head of Prevention and Preparation, in Garut, Friday, Feb. 21.

Agus said that the 4.9 magnitude quake started at around 8 a.m., precisely in the sea, 112 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya.

The tremor caused the failure of the retaining walls up to 12-meter high and 50-meter long in Pondok Indah Palasari housing complex, Cijolang, Limbangan. “When the quake hit, the retaining walls crack and collapse to the street,” Agus recalled.

The disaster was recorded by a local resident on a video showing the landslide suddenly occurred amid sunny weather, and the traffic could not be stopped.

Fortunately, the landslide only hit the side of the road, and there was no report of casualty.

A resident named Hilal Saepul (26) claimed he acknowledged the crack in the retaining wall before it failed. He said, the housing complex’s developer reportedly had two times constructed walls to retain the cliffs.
