TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 6.5-magnitude earthquake that jolted Garut District, West Java Province, Indonesia, on Saturday (April 27) evening, has resulted in at least 41 damaged houses, according to the district's Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).

"Based on latest reports, the earthquake damaged 41 houses and one health facility, namely Pameungpeuk Hospital," Head of Garut BPBD Aah Anwar Saefuloh remarked in Garut on Sunday, April 28, 2024.

In response to the disaster, he noted that the BPBD and relevant institutions immediately deployed personnel to monitor affected areas, and found four injured people in the process.

"We have found four injured people and they have been treated by public health posts. All of the four people suffer from minor injuries," he pointed out.

Saefuloh revealed that the four people are residents of the sub-districts of Pameungpeuk, Cisompet, and Singajaya.

Meanwhile, Deputy Head of Garut Resort Police, Commissioner Dhoni Erwanto, remarked that his side had deployed personnel to conduct monitoring and data collection and take disaster mitigation measures to assist earthquake-hit residents.

"We have yet to record any casualties. Currently, our personnel are conducting patrols in the entire area of Garut to provide assistance to people following the earthquake and keep the situation conducive, he stated.

Based on a report from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the 6.5-magnitude earthquake occurred in the sea at a distance of 156 kilometers southwest of Garut District at a depth of 70 kilometers.

The agency also underlined that the tremor was unlikely to lead to a tsunami.

"The modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami," the head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono said in Bandung, West Java, on Sunday.

According to reports, the earthquake was also felt by residents of other regions, including Bandung, Pangandaran, and Tasikmalaya.
