TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is to take prompt steps to repair the infrastructure that was damaged by floods that swept Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) district, South Sumatra, Indonesia, on May 7, 2024.

This was conveyed by the agency's deputy for logistics and equipment, Lilik Kurniawan, during his visit to OKU to review the situation and hand out assistance to affected people on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

He also asked the OKU district government to submit a proposal to the BNPB, so that the agency can take immediate follow-up measures for tending to damaged infrastructure, including bridges.

"Please, send us a proposal immediately. We cannot afford to let the damaged infrastructure remain unattended as that might disrupt people's activities," he told OKU district officials.

Regarding the aid, he said it comprises ready-to-use funds amounting to Rp200 million (US$12.5 thousand) to support flood emergency measures and also logistics items, including staple commodities, ready-to-eat meals, hygiene kits, boats, generators, and tents.

"Hopefully, this assistance will help relieve the burden on people affected by floods in OKU district," he said.

The official expressed the hope that the local government would succeed in analyzing the cause of the floods, with the end goal of identifying mitigation steps to avert similar disasters in the future.

Meanwhile, the acting head of OKU district, Teddy Meilwansyah, described the May 7 flood as the worst flood ever recorded in the district as it forced hundreds of residents to evacuate.

"Thank God, we have received plenty of assistance dedicated to those affected. We will soon make a proposal to conduct repairs on damaged infrastructure, such as suspension bridges," he added.
