11 People Died in Fatal Bus Accident in Subang, Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A bus carrying a group of students from Lingga Kencana Vocational School, Pancoran Mas, Depok, had an accident in the Subang area, Saturday, May 11, 2024. The group was returning to Depok after holding a school farewell in Bandung on May 10-11. As of this afternoon, 11 members of the group had died in the incident.

The bus with the number plate AD 7524 DG rolled over. Several people suffered severe injuries; some passengers, including teachers and pupils, even lost their lives. It is suspected that the bus overturned because the brakes failed at a road leading downhill at Ciater, Subang.

Head of Depok Metro Police Traffic Unit, Commissioner Multazam Lisendra, said the police would help evacuate the victims, Saturday evening, May 11, 2024. The plan is that the Depok Metro Police will deploy 10 ambulances.

"This is a direct instruction from the Depok Metro Police Chief," said Multazam in Depok, Saturday evening, May 11, 2024.

The Depok Metro Police has coordinated with the Health Service and the Depok City Fire and Rescue Service in sending an ambulance to Subang.

The police visited the location of the bus accident today, May 12, 2024. Based on observations at the scene, the police found no traces of the vehicle's brakes.

"There were no traces of brakes from the bus. What was there were tire marks, one part, it is thought to be the right tire, there were several meters there," said Head of the National Police Traffic Corps, Inspector General Aan Suhanan. "Then, at the end, the bus hit a power pole."

Aan suspects that the accident occurred due to a brake failure so that the bus swerved to the right and hit another car coming from the opposite direction. This collision caused the bus to roll over. Apart from the brakes failing, said Aan, there is also the possibility that the bus driver panicked and could not control the speed of the bus.

The Depok City Government has also prepared 10 graves for the victims who died in the bus accident carrying the Lingga Kencana Vocational School group. "We have prepared some of them at Pasir Putih TPU," said Deputy Mayor of Depok Imam Budi Hartono in Depok, Sunday, May 12, 2024.

Depok Mayor Mohammad Idris previously emphasized that the costs of treating injured victims would be fully borne by the Depok government. Meanwhile, compensation will be given to the families of the victims who died. "All costs use the Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBD), we have prepared for unexpected events like this (accidents)," he said.

The Education Department was instructed to assess study tours conducted outside of the city and create a circular to examine the planning of study tours to other locations by the Deputy Chairman of Commission D of the Depok City DPRD, Babai Suhaimi. "If the study tour is not mandatory and has no value in improving the quality of education, it would be better to cancel it," he stated. "If there are benefits, look for study tour locations in tourist destinations that don't contain many risks."

He also added that the Depok City Government will coordinate with schools to prevent similar incidents from recurring in the future. For him, this incident is a lesson and needs to be evaluated so that the central government can coordinate everything.
