TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has expressed support for the leadership of Malaysia, the next ASEAN chair, in helping resolve the crisis in Myanmar.

Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi, during a meeting with her Malaysian counterpart Mohamad bin Hasan in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, expressed the hope that Malaysia will maintain the inclusive approach that Indonesia applied during its ASEAN chairmanship in 2023.

"We agreed to continue to bolster the unity of stakeholders in inclusive dialogues, expand humanitarian assistance that is also inclusive and unpolarized, and push support and synergy from the international community in efforts made by ASEAN," she said, as per a transcript of her press statement.

She also reiterated Indonesia's commitment to the Five-Point Consensus (5PC), which is meant as a reference for resolving the political crisis in Myanmar through the troika mechanism.

The troika mechanism — which will be implemented by Indonesia as last year's and Laos as this year's ASEAN chair and also by Malaysia as chair of the grouping next year — is considered crucial to ensure the continuity of efforts to handle the Myanmar issue.

Besides the Myanmar issue, the two ministers also shared the same concerns about the situation in Palestine.

Marsudi highlighted that the two countries have a strong commitment to supporting Palestine's independence.

To this end, Indonesia and Malaysia agreed to continuously act firmly and be active at various international forums, such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations (UN), use other multilateral routes, and support Palestine through bilateral efforts.

"I conveyed that Indonesia will continue to make efforts to ensure an immediate and permanent ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian aid deliveries, and preparations for the establishment of a Palestinian state – including regarding recognition and full membership in the UN," she said.

She added that Indonesia will continue to press for the two-state solution.
