TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A joint police and military effort in Bogor confiscated 130 sacks full of goldmine tailings or rocks that contain gold from three illegal mines in Bogor’s Banyu Asih village, West Java.
The activities of illegal gold mines in the western area of Bogor Regency are reported to have contributed to the landslides happening in the region. This topic emerged nationally after the disastrous landslides and flash floods on Wednesday, January 1, 2020.
“The investigation managed to secure 130 sacks of rocks containing gold and tools to separate the golds from other minerals,” said Bogor Police Chief Muhammad Joni in a press conference at the Bogor Police Headquarters today, Feb. 6.
According to Joni, authorities initially nabbed seven people from the illegal gold mine site but arrested only four who acted as the person accommodating the illegal gold rocks that were processed by illegal gold mines run by the other three suspects.
In terms of value, each of the goldmines in the Banyu Asih village run by the three suspects is estimated to garner up to Rp50 million each month.
