TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Garut District, West Java, is monitoring the entire area to determine the impact following an earthquake.

Previously, an earthquake measuring 6.5 magnitude and updated to 6.2 occurred in Garut on Saturday evening (April 27) around 11:29 p.m. (local time).

Chief Executive of BPBD Garut, Aah Anwar Saefuloh, when confirmed by journalists in Garut early Sunday morning, said that his staff were monitoring every development in the area after the earthquake.

"We are monitoring reports from the region," Saefuloh said.

He said that the situation, which is currently being reported by the community, has calmed down again.

However, his staff was still ready to ensure that conditions in Garut were safe.

He appealed to the public to remain calm and not panic due to the natural disaster that occurred in Garut.

"The public is advised not to panic, but to remain alert," he added.

Apart from the BPBD Garut, the Garut Police Water and Air Police Unit (Satpolairud) also carries out direct monitoring of the situation and conditions of sea water and community activities on the coast.

Head of the Garut Police Water and Air Police Unit, AKP Anang Sonjaya, said that the current situation on the coast after the earthquake was safe.

He said that a group of his members had been deployed to monitor sea wave conditions, and the results were normal; the weather was cloudy and the wind strength was moderate.

Other personnel also appealed to the public and tourists at Santolo Beach to remain calm, saying the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami.

"The situation is safe," he said.

The people in Garut District felt the shock of the earthquake quite strongly; even those who were asleep immediately woke up because they felt the earthquake."Yes, it feels very strong," said Muslim, a resident of Garut City.

Apart from the Garut City area, the earthquake was also felt by residents in the highland areas of the mountainous areas in the Samarang Sub-district area.

"I felt the earthquake. Thank God, the people in the house were safe," said Sinta, a local resident.

Based on the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) report, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5, later updated to a magnitude of 6.2, was centered in the sea 151 km southwest of Garut District with a depth of 10 km.
