6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Indonesia's West Java, Shocks Felt in Depok

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Java island on Saturday night, according to the the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).
The shocks was also felt in Depok. Even though it lasted briefly, the earthquake at 23:30 WIB (Western Indonesia Time) was felt by the local residents quite strongly.
"There was an earthquake," said Raja Harahap, a resident of Sukmajaya Village, Sukmajaya District, Depok, Saturday evening, April 27 2024.
Raja, who was setting up his motorbike, stopped for a moment and rushed out of the shophouse on Jalan Juanda, Beji Depok District. "I got out of the shop first, the earthquake is quite strong," said Raja.
A resident of Cilangkap Village, Tapos District, Anjar Setiawan felt the same thing, he immediately reported about the earthquake in the WhatsApp group.
"There's an earthquake happening, be careful guys, hopefully we will always be protected by Allah SWT (God)," said Anjar.
A resident of Mekarjaya, Dian, said that in her area, she felt the earthquake shock, like what she felt while accompanying volunteers in the Cianjur Earthquake.
"It felt like I was being pushed down, because I was in a sleeping position," said Dian.
"There's an Earthquake, when I was sitting on the floor, I really felt the vibrations of the earthquake," said Dewi Kesrini, a resident of Cilodong.
She also advised not to sleep and to stay awake for a while because there were concerns about aftershocks. "Hopefully there will be no aftershocks," said Dewi.
Based on information from the BMKG, an earthquake measuring 6.5 magnitude occurred 151 kilometers southwest of Garut Regency, West Java with a depth of 10 kilometers at 23:29 WIB.
Even though the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami, BMKG reminded the public to be alert for aftershocks.
