TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Ibu, a stratovolcano or cone-shaped volcano located northwest of Halmahera Island, North Maluku, has experienced increased volcanic activity, according to the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG). On May 9, the agency recorded two major eruptions at 18:13 and 6:35 p.m. Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT).
“The ash column, which was observed to be gray and thick, was moving eastward,” said the volcano monitoring post officer, Richard Chaniago, on Thursday night.
Richard explained that the first eruption reached a height of about 1,500 meters and a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters for 411 seconds. The second eruption occurred 24 minutes later, reaching a height of 1,200 meters with a maximum amplitude of 10 millimeters for 277 seconds.
As of May 8, 2024, Mount Ibu’s alert status was raised to level III (Siaga) of the four-tiered volcano alert system due to increased volcanic activity and seismicity.
Therefore, the public is prohibited from hiking or engaging in other activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the volcano's summit. The agency also recommended a five-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater in the northern part.
Residents of specific villages located more than four kilometers from the northern crater of Mount Ibu, including Duono, Tukuoko, Goin, Togorebasu, Sangajinyeku, Toguis, Todoke, and Borona, are advised to remain vigilant and comply with local government orders.
