Jokowi Meets Elon Musk; Talk on Tesla, SpaceX Investment Plan in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi met with the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk, on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum Summit at the Bali International Convention Center (BICC), Bali on Monday, May 20, 2024. Jokowi and Musk discussed, among other things, the potential for investment in Indonesia.
Jokowi appreciated Musk for his participation as a speaker at the World Water Forum Summit to discuss the importance of water management. The head of state also invited Musk to expand his investments in Indonesia, which include companies such as SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, and Boring.
"Mr Musk, Indonesia is currently undergoing accelerated national digital transformation and opening up a lot of investment potential in the infrastructure, government technology, digital economy, and digital society sectors," said Jokowi, quoted from a written statement from the Presidential Secretariat Press Bureau.
Musk, one of the world's richest people from the United States, arrived in Bali on Sunday, May 19, 2024. Elon Musk launched Starlink at a public health center in Denpasar with the Indonesian Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
Regarding the Starlink collaboration, Jokowi hopes the device can synergize with local internet providers to provide affordable internet access, prioritize consumer protection, and affordable internet prices, especially at public health centers and remote schools across Indonesia.
Elon Musk, in a statement, said he was honored to participate in the World Water Forum Summit and happy to be in Bali. "We hope to provide Starlink connectivity to support education and health facilities in Indonesia," said Musk.
