Palace Comments on People's Court Trying Jokowi

25 June 2024 20:59 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Presidential Palace responded to the People's Tribunal that tried the government of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo. Coordinator of the Presidential Special Staff, Ari Dwipayana, emphasized that the government is receptive to both criticism and support.

“Criticism is common in democratic countries. Criticism can be a constructive input to enhance all government areas,” Ari said in a short message to Tempo on Tuesday, June 25.

Ari explained that diverse views, perceptions, and assessments of government performance are normal in a healthy democracy. The government also appreciates positive feedback, support, and trust from the public, such as the Litbang Kompas survey.

The latest Kompas survey, published on June 20, showed that public satisfaction with the Jokowi-Ma'ruf administration increased from 73.59 percent in December 2023 to 75.6 percent in June 2024.

“The important thing is that we respect each other's different views,” Ari remarked.

The Extraordinary People's Court convened the People's Tribunal at the University of Indonesia (UI) Wisma Makara in Depok, West Java on Tuesday, June 25. Nine judges from various backgrounds, including human rights activist Asfinawati and democracy activist Anita Wahid, who is the daughter of Indonesia's fourth President, the late Abdurrahman Wahid, were assigned to preside over the case against Jokowi's government.

They referred to the lawsuit as "Nawadosa", which signifies the nine sins of the Jokowi regime. These include land grabbing, persecution, corruption, militarism and militarization, commercialization of education, crimes against humanity and impunity, impoverished work systems, and piracy of legislation.

The People's Tribunal is an alternative court in a democratic system designed to resolve legal problems and is a movement born out of civil society's lack of trust in state policies and law enforcement.
