TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) disclosed three primary functions of the Indonesia Digital Test House (IDTH), which was recently inaugurated by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo. The IDTH serves as a laboratory for testing telecommunications equipment before its distribution in the country.
“It has three main functions. Firstly, it is for protection. Secondly, it is for the development of domestic industry, and finally, it is for the management and supervision of telecommunications equipment,” said Ismail, the Director General of Resources, Post, and Information Technology (SDPPI), at the Kominfo Building on Friday, May 17.
The IDTH was built with 12 laboratory facilities to ensure that every digital technology device intended for distribution is not hazardous and its safety is guaranteed. Ismail emphasized the importance of testing every newly manufactured and sold device for its adverse effects on human health.
Exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic waves from gadgets exceeding reasonable limits can damage human skin cells and even cause cancer. “Some of the tools we use are imported for their international standards to subject them to testing,” he added.
Ismail stressed that the IDTH is currently the preeminent digital device testing laboratory in Indonesia. “It resembles a type A hospital that can address all concerns and serve as a reference due to its comprehensive functions.”
Who has access to the IDTH facilities?
As previously reported, the Head of Telecommunication Equipment Testing Centers (BBPPT) Syaharuddin mentioned that the testing facilities under the auspices of the SDPPI Directorate General will collaborate with universities and independent researchers.
He noted that his agency has recently cooperated with independent researchers and provided support for testing facilities for radio devices to be used by fishermen. “As long as it is not for commercial purposes, we offer testing facilities free of charge,” said Syaharuddin.
However, if the research is to be commercialized, the device must undergo re-testing and of course, there is a fee for the facilities of the Indonesia Digital Test House used.
