M 5.1 Earthquake Strikes Bali, NTB; No Tsunami Threat

8 May 2024 08:37 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaAn earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 struck the southern regions of Bali and West Nusa Tenggara on Wednesday, May 8, at 05:09:55 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), reported the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The agency confirmed that the quake’s epicenter was located at 9.60 degrees South Latitude and 115.81 degrees East Longitude, or more precisely located in the sea,108 kilometers southwest of West Lombok, at a depth of 82 kilometers.

“Considering the epicenter and the hypocenter, it was an intermediate quake caused by rock deformation activity within the plate (intra-slab),” the agency’s head of quake and tsunami center, Daryono, said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the quake has a thrust fault mechanism,” he added.

The tremors were felt in Badung, Denpasar, Gianyar, Tabanan, Central Lombok, West Lombok, East Lombok, Mataram City, North Lombok, and West Sumbawa with an intensity scale of III MMI. In the Karangasem area, it was felt at the II MMI intensity scale.

The BMKG also confirmed that the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami. As of 05:30 a.m., the agency has not yet recorded any aftershocks.
