TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale rocked the northwest sea of West Halmahera Regency, Maluku, on Thursday, February 7, at 11:15 West Indonesian Time (WIB).

The head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center of the Meteorology, Climatology, Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Rahmat Triyono, on a written statement received in Jakarta, Thursday, said that the tectonic earthquake did not have a potential to trigger a tsunami.

Based on BMKG analysis, the tremor with an updated 5.7 magnitudes occurred at 1.58 degrees north latitude and 126.43 degrees east longitude, 128 kilometers northwest of Jailolo City, West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province, at a depth of 39 kilometers.

Rahmat explained that, based on the epicenter and the hypocenter, it was considered as a shallow earthquake due to the deformation of rocks in the Maluku Sea Plate.

The tremor was felt in Mandao, Minahasa, North Minahasa, Southeast Minahasa, Bitung, and Ternate in the intensity scale of III-IV MMI. As of press time, there is no report on damages caused by the earthquake.
