TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale jolted Mamuju District and several regions of West Sulawesi Province, Wednesday afternoon, February 6.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Majene, the quake occurred at 12:23 Central Indonesian Time (WITA). The center of the quake was at 2.96 degrees south latitude and 118.52 degrees east longitude, 36 kilometers southwest of Tapalang Barat sub-district, at a depth of eight kilometers.
“It is a tectonic earthquake and has no potential to trigger a tsunami. The tremor is felt in almost all regions of West Sulawesi and lasts for several seconds,” said BMKG official Ayu Indrawati.
BMKG reminded the public to remain calm and not easily influenced by baseless information spread on social media.
The agency also called for all to be aware of potential aftershock.
The secretary of West Sulawesi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Yulius, said that there is no detail yet on casualties or damages due to the earthquake up to 14:40 WITA.
