TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of rain potential from moderate to heavy with lightning and strong wind in several provinces on Friday, May 3.
Citing the BMKG page, heavy rains with lightning and strong wind to occur in Bali, Bangka Belitung, Banten, and Gorontalo. Next are Jambi, West Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, and Lampung.
Heavy rains, still with lightning and strong wind will also drench Maluku, North Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara or NTT, Papua, West Papua, Riau, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, West Sumatra, North Sulawesi, South Sumatera, and West Sumatra.
Based on BMKG information on seasonal development, about 63 percent of the seasonal zone areas are predicted to experience the onset of the dry season from May to August 2024.
The agency's meteorology deputy Guswanto said that in the next week, BMKG still identified the potential for a significant increase in rainfall, namely in most parts of Sumatra, western and central areas of Java, parts of Kalimantan and Sulawesi, Maluku, and most parts of Papua.
"The significant increase in rainfall is due to the activities of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), Kelvin and Rossby equatorial waves, as well as the warm condition of sea surface temperature in the territorial waters around Indonesia," Guswanto said.
