TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts that rainfall will decrease in the first ten days of May 2024 in West Java.
The West Java BMKG Climatology Station predicts that 52.1 percent of areas will have a rainfall intensity of less than 50 millimeters per day. This includes the coast from Bekasi, Karawang, Subang, Indramayu and Cirebon, Sumedang, Majalengka, Kuningan, Greater Bandung, parts of Garut, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, Banjar, Pangandaran. Low-intensity rain also covers Sukabumi and southern Cianjur.
The areas with moderate rain, namely 50-150 millimeters per day, cover 45 regions of West Java, including parts of Sukabumi which borders Bogor, Cianjur, and Depok, as well as the Purwakarta area. Meanwhile, areas with relatively high rainfall intensity, 150-300 millimeters per day, include Bogor City to the southern part of Bogor Regency.
Previously the BMKG Climatology Station monitored that 83.9 percent of areas in West Java experienced between 1-5 days without rain in April 2024. Long to extreme droughts are declared nil. Days without moderate rain for 11-20 days occur in Telaga Sari, Karawang Regency.
As West Java enters the dry season, the Head of the Bandung Geophysics Station, Teguh Rahayu, urged residents to be alert to the potential impacts of bad weather occurring during the transition period from the rainy to the dry season. For example, heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds as well as the potential for tornadoes and hail.
BMKG also urges residents to be aware of hydrometeorological disasters such as puddles, floods, landslides, uprooted trees, and other damaging impacts. "Especially for areas with steep, mountainous or landslide-prone topography, you should remain alert, especially during rain with light to a heavy intensity that occurs for several days in a row," he said Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
