ICW Logs Significant Hike in Corruption Cases in the Past 5 Years

20 May 2024 08:01 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) recorded 791 corruption cases with 1,695 suspects throughout 2023. An ICW researcher Diky Anandya said the number had increased significantly compared to the previous year, during which there were only 579 cases and 1,396 suspects.

“There is a significant increase in the number of cases and suspects declared by law enforcement officials in 2023,” Diky said at the ICW Office in South Jakarta, on Sunday, May 19.

Despite the surge in graft cases and suspects, the potential state losses in 2023 were lower than those in 2022. The ICW's records show that potential state losses amounted to Rp42.7 trillion in 2022, but decreased to Rp28.4 trillion in 2023.

“In 2023, the potential for state losses decreased, but ICW considers it to still be substantial,” said Diky.

ICW conducted comprehensive monitoring of corruption trends across 38 provinces, involving data from the Prosecutor's Office, the police, and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

The data collection was carried out in two ways, namely primary and secondary sources, where primary data was obtained from official websites of law enforcement agencies and secondary data was obtained from mass media reports.

The ICW found 271 corruption cases with 580 suspects and potential state losses of Rp8.4 trillion in 2019; 444 corruption cases with 875 suspects and potential state losses of Rp18.6 trillion in 2020; 533 cases with 1,173 suspects and potential state losses of Rp29.4 trillion in 2021; 579 cases with 1,396 suspects and potential state losses of Rp42.7 trillion in 2022, and 791 cases with 1,695 suspects and state losses of Rp28.4 trillion in 2023.
