JK: Fuel Price Will Be Increased Soon

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf “JK” Kalla said the government should decide to increase subsidized fuel prices sooner to shun perception that the government was undetermined with the policy.
“We need to decide [the fuel price hike] sooner and it will be announced as soon as the president arrived home to dismiss hesitation,” JK said at the Vice President Palace in Jakarta on Friday, November 14, 2014.
However, JK stopped short when asked about the timing and asked the public to wait. According to JK, the government is currently calculating the amount of the increase by taking the decreasing the world oil price and weakening rupiah into account.
“We wave to recalculate [the amount of the fuel price increase]. Off course, we will adjust it with the current conditions,” JK explained.
According to JK, the government believes that the declining oil price would not last for long. However, JK still disagreed that fuel price should be increased when the oil price dropped. JK argued that the fuel price should be increased at the right time and conditions.
“If we increase the price when the [world oil price] drops, it won't be good for the people,” JK said.
