TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PSSI officially extended Shin Tae-yong's contract as head coach of the Indonesian national team until 2027. The announcement was made directly by PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir through his official personal Instagram account.
"After enjoying Korean food and discussing the Indonesian national team program until 2027, Coach Shin Tae-Yong and I agreed to continue our cooperation," Erick wrote in a photo caption on Instagram on Thursday, April 25, 2024.
Erick Thohir also has other reasons. He considered Shin Tae-Yong, the 53-year-old South Korean coach, to have successfully brought the Indonesian national team in a better direction.
Indonesia's achievements at the Asian level are a benchmark. Under Shin Tae-yong, the Indonesian national team, qualified for the first time in world football history from the group phase of the 2023 Asian Cup and penetrated the knockout phase.
At the U-23 national team level, Shin Tae-yong led Indonesia to qualify for the tournament for the first time. The former South Korea coach at the 2018 World Cup also managed to bring the Indonesian national team through to the last eight of the U-23 Asian Cup. One more victory opens the Red and White Squad's chance to win a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
After the Indonesian national team earned a 4-1 victory over Jordan in the last match of the Group A phase, which ensured a move to the quarterfinals, Erick Thohir asked the players about Shin Tae-yong's future. In the dressing room, the players said their coach should stay.
Shon Tae-yong immediately faced a tough challenge. The Indonesian U-23 national team will play South Korea in the quarter-finals of the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup on Friday morning, April 26, 2024, at 00.30.
The Indonesian national team is on a positive trend. After losing 0-2 to Qatar in the first match of Group A, Marselino Ferdinan and friends rose to pick up wins over Australia and Jordan. With improved performance, Shin Tae-yong and his players are expected to be surprised at the tournament.
