TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) releases its weekly weather forecast for August 27 to September 2, 2024. According to the weather agency, Maluku, North Maluku must beware of an increased level of rainfall along with Papua, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and northern and central Sumatra.
Flash floods hit Ternate, North Maluku on early Sunday morning, August 25 which killed at least 18 people.
For the record, the BMKG Pattimura Meteorological Station in Ambon, Maluku, recorded rainfall of up to 154 mm throughout August 22, which is classified as extreme rain. The rainfall intensity exceeded the previous highest records of 106 mm and 148 mm per day from the Aceh Maimun Meteorological Station and West Sumatra Minangkabau, respectively on August 18 and 19.
According to BMKG, the hike in rainfall potential in the upcoming week is still influenced by global weather phenomena of active Kelvin Waves, Equatorial Rossby, and Madden-Julian Oscillation. Emphasis is given to the MJO phenomenon which will enter phase 3 in the Indian Ocean region and phase 4 in the Indonesian region.
"(MJO) Phases 3, 4, and 5 occur in the areas around Indonesia. If active in that region, the potential for convective cloud growth will increase," said BMKG weather forecaster Nanda Alfuadi.
Meanwhile, the Kelvin equatorial wave activity is expected to be active in the central to southern Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi regions. The Rossby atmospheric wave will likely be active in the southern Sumatra, southern Kalimantan, southern Sulawesi, Maluku, and southern Papua regions.
"All of this can increase the potential for rain cloud formation in these regions," reads the latest weekly weather outlook from BMKG. Several other factors also influence the growth of rain clouds, including the atmospheric lability and the wind confluence and deceleration area.
