BMKG: Tonight's Earthquake in Yogyakarta from Megathrust Zone

26 August 2024 22:07 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaAn earthquake centered on the sea rocked several areas along the southern coast of Java on Monday night, August 26, 2024. The strongest tremors, as mapped by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), were felt in Yogyakarta, reaching a scale of III-IV MMI.

This intensity indicates that the earthquake was felt strongly inside houses, similar to the sensation of a passing truck. Many people inside houses would have felt the shaking and heard doors and windows creaking.

“Jogja city felt it significantly. Hopefully, everyone remains cautious and alert,” said a netizen in response to the earthquake information from BMKG on social media X.

The agency’s data revealed that the quake, which occurred at 19:57:42 Western Indonesia time (WIB), had a magnitude of 5.8. Its epicenter was located in the Indian Ocean, 107 kilometers southwest of Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta Province, at a depth of 42 kilometers.

“The shallow quake was caused by rock deformation in the contact area between plates (megathrust),” stated the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, in a statement following the quake.

Daryono confirmed, based on the BMKG modeling, that the quake did not pose a tsunami risk. However, two aftershocks were recorded until 20:20 WIB.

He urged the public to remain calm and inspect buildings for any cracks or damage caused by the quake. “Check and ensure that the building where you live is quake-resistant and that there is no structural damage due to the quake vibrations that could compromise the building's stability before returning home.”

According to BMKG data, tremors on the III-IV MMI scale were felt in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Kulonprogo, and Bantul. Weaker tremors, on the II-III MMI scale, were experienced in the areas of Karangkates, Malang, Pacitan, Nganjuk, Trenggalek, Madiun, Kediri, Blitar, Cilacap, Banyumas, Solo, Surakarta, and Klaten.
