TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) said it was monitoring the arrest of several Indonesian citizens abroad for drug trafficking, including the arrest of one Revi Cahya Sulihatun in Osaka, Japan, in early June.

"(We monitored the arrest) in Osaka too," the Head of BNN, Marthinus Hukom told Tempo on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

The Osaka District Prosecutor's Office arrested Revi at Kansai International Airport on June 10 for carrying 1.5 kilograms of drugs she brought from Jakarta.

Revi’s family and friends thought the young woman was missing upon arrival in Osaka. However, the Indonesian Consulate received the information about Revi’s arrest on June 12, 2024. Her family was soon informed about Revi’s condition through the Director of Citizen Protection at the Foreign Ministry Judha Nugraha.

Rumors circulated about Revi’s arrest. Some thought Revi was apprehended for being an undocumented worker using a tourist visa, as her visa noted an exit date of June 25, 2024. Judha Nugraha could not confirm the nature of Revi’s arrest in Osaka as local authorities are still investigating the case.

Previously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that 165 Indonesian citizens are facing the death penalty abroad, with the majority arrested for being drug couriers. “Sometimes, these people have no idea what kind of goods they are carrying and only find out that it’s drugs when airports check them,” Judha said in Yogyakarta, on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
