TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nearing the end of 2023, the Health Ministry recorded that the spread of Covid-19 variant JN.1 in Indonesia continues to increase, reaching 41 cases.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said the case findings were based on the results of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) examinations of 77 samples or 43 percent of the 453 confirmed Covid-19 cases from November to early December 2023.
"The sequence results showed an increase in JN.1 cases. From only 1 percent in early November, to 19 percent in the third week of November. By early December it had receded to 43 percent," the minister said during a press conference of the 'Sector Preparedness Health Facing the Christmas and New Year Holidays', on Friday, December 22.
Minister Budi said that of the 41 cases found, five were confirmed between November 6 and 23. Two were in North Jakarta, one in South Jakarta, one in East Jakarta, and one in Batam.
During sampling from December 1 to 12, 36 more cases were found. Twenty-nine of those cases were in South Jakarta, two in East Jakarta, two in North Jakarta, and three in Batam.
Budi said the majority of patients or around 39 percent who were confirmed were asymptomatic. Meanwhile, most of the 14 percent of patients with symptoms experienced cough, runny nose, and sore throat.
With the rising number of positive cases, the minister appealed to the public to re-implement health protocols in a disciplined manner to break the chain of transmission of Covid-19. He also appealed to the public to get vaccinated at the nearest health service facility or vaccination posts.
