TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 4.2 magnitudes jolted Bandung Regency, West Java, at 10:06 a.m. local time on Wednesday, May 1, as reported by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
Daryono, head of the BMKG’s quake and tsunami center, said the tectonic quake was located on land at a distance of 20 kilometers southeast of Bandung Regency.
“It was at a depth of four kilometers,” he said in a written statement.
Based on the epicenter and the hypocenter, he explained that the shallow quake was triggered by the activity of the South Garut Fault. The agency’s shake map showed that the tremors were felt in several areas, including Majalaya, Ciwidey, Banjaran, Cibereum, Pangalengan, and Garut with an intensity scale of III MMI, which means it was felt indoors like a truck passing by.
Moreover, the shaking was also reported in the Soreang, Pasirwangi, and other Garut areas at a lower intensity of II MMI.
Although there have been no reports of damage to buildings caused by the earthquake, the BMKG recorded two aftershocks as of 10:28 a.m. local time.
